Occupational Therapy is a unique style of treatment that looks at the individual as a whole person and acknowledges how one area of the body influences another. Rather than simply treating an injury or condition we treat the whole person. Our job as OT’s is to improve the patient’s quality of life and help them to become as independent as possible for their individual situation. Therapists design treatments that are unique to the individual’s needs and abilities. We modify activities (otherwise known as occupations) that are meaningful to the patient to create the “just right challenge” for them. In this way, treatment is not only enjoyable but also allows for more engagement by the patient and improved outcomes.
The goal of Myo is to improve functional use of the mouth including eating, talking, and breathing abilities through exercise and changing previous oral habits. In children, it can also facilitate proper orofacial development for function and aesthetics. Myofunctional therapy treatment improves the strength and range of motion of the cheeks, lips, tongue, and jaw by teaching patients how to engage the musculature in the appropriate position. It is a non-surgical approach to mitigate a variety of symptoms whose root causes are in oral dysfunction.
